Buchu is native to South Africa and forms part of the Cape Fynbos Floral Kingdom. It is an evergreen aromatic shrub up to 2m high. The two main variants of Buchu are Agathosma Crenulata (oval-leaf Buchu) and Agathosma Betulina (round-leaf Buchu). Buchu essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant through steam distillation.

It has been used as a traditional medicine by the Khoisan people for many years and was later exported to Europe by the Dutch colonists after they learned about Buchu’s antibiotic properties for stomach pains. It was the Khoisan that first called Buchu the ‘elixir of youth’. Today Buchu is used in the perfume, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, tea, aromatic and aromatherapy industries. In the food industry, it is used as a natural flavouring (black current flavouring in foodstuffs).

Buchu is one of the best remedies for urinary diseases due to its diuretic properties as it contains an oil that increases urine production. Being carminative, this oil helps remove gas from the stomach and intestines. This relieves uncomfortable symptoms such as nausea, headache, drowsiness, indigestion and vomiting.  Aside from relieving the body form excess gas, Buchu oil also aids digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive juices.

Buchu oil is a powerful natural resource which, due to naturally occurring components such as uercetin, rutin, hesperidin, diosmin (bioflavonoids), diosphenol and Vitamins A, B and E yields fantastic results without any harmful side effects.

Due to this Buchu can assist in the treatment of:

  • Arthritis, gout and joint pain
  • Skin conditions such as eczema/psoriasis
  • Bladder & urinary tract infections
  • Detoxing and digestion problems
  • Antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory to soothe and assists with healing of rashes, bites, burns & bruises.
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Management of healthy blood sugar levels (anti-diabetic)
  • Cardiovascular protecting properties

Buchu can be ingested in extracts such as tea, water or infused brandy. Or it can topically be applied to problem areas where it is absorbed by the skin. With such a versatile range of applications, do make sure you include Buchu in your everyday health and wellness routine.
